The Art of Socialising

It's funny how we as humans learn how to socialise ( some pick it up better than others, some never quite get it!). And when you have a baby, you actually get to see and observe when these skills are actually picked up.

I now realise you can't expect young babies to play together. You can put them together but they won't interact. They'll just play on their own, even though they are sitting side by side. Or they will treat the other baby like a toy, or a new object and just observe from a distance. Someone once told me not to expect babies to play together till they are at least 2 years old!

I still try though to get Alison to socialise. Some experience is better than nothing. But sometimes it goes awry.

Like when little Alexandra, who stays 15 floors up from my place, came to visit. Here she is below.

Alex and Ally used to get along great before but this particular time, Ally seemed almost afraid of Alex and behaved rather sullenly throughout the socialising session.

Ally running away!

Alex just wants to give Ally a loving hug ..
but Ally is not too pleased.

Neither does she seem to like this massage

Now that I think about it, maybe it boils down to the fact that Ally is going through this "wary crybaby" phase while Alex is getting bolder. And well, kids are rather rough when it comes to their hugs, no matter how well intentioned.

Anyway, the only time Ally smiled during that visit was while sitting safely in her toy bin.

Even Alex's groovy toy bicycle thingy couldn't cheer her up.
