Ok, it's undeniable that breastmilk is best for baby and for mum. But it is a little "trying" for the fashion conscious because
* It is so difficult to find a nursing bra good for trendy outfits!
I swear the current nursing bras out there are meant to be worn under big, fuddy-duddy t shirts because they all have thick ugly straps and are made of cotton material that bunches up under your fitting outfits, giving that crinkled look around the boobies.
It never fits as well as it does on the model in the picture! The one nursing bra I love is currently sold in my shop Maternity Exchange and is imported from the UK. It is super soft, super comfy and has 'thin" straps which look good under spaghetti strap tops. But I still haven't found the perfect bra to wear under my tube tops. Yes, there is no such thing as a good strapless nursing bra around. I've tried some by the local maternity brands but they are all way too tight and it's always free size. Considering that I am already on the small side, I wonder who else can fit into those bras. Please let me know if you have found a good strapless bra!
* Nursing pads show through so easily!
I am so tired of having to change my outfit because I can always see the outline of my nursing pads! They look like two fried egg whites! The only time they don't show is under a shapeless loose top. Even my dark coloured tank tops are not spared the telltale round outlines. I tried a padded nursing bra by a local brand but the padding was just too thick. By the time I added the nursing pads in, I looked like Dolly Parton.
But I think I might have found the solution in lilypadz. These are stick-ons that work by exerting constant pressure on the nipples so that there is no let-down and mums don't leak. Much like how nursing mums are told to use your arm to exert pressure on the nipple to control the let down. Anyone tried this? If they work, then it's hooray for fashionable mums who can wear tight tops again!
* Your clothes are always crumpled!
But then this is the case for anyone with kids.... hahah
* You are stuck wearing "separates"
It's impossible to lift a dress to feed and the range of nursing dresses out there is still rather limited.
Nursing is also tough for the shy or conservative ones. Even with nursing tops making it easier to nurse discreetly, it is still an ART to do it without anyone noticing. I think perhaps the only one who can do this is Sharon Norton, owner of Mothers En Vogue and who makes great nursing wear. I remember having a meeting with her once when she just picked her 2 year old daughter up and very seamlessly latched her on with not a nipple in sight.
For the rest of us, it is usually quite difficult to get the baby to latch on so discreetly. If your baby is the impatient type or the noisy when hungry type, die. Good luck to you trying to nurse unnoticed.
Now that I am nursing my second baby, I have gotten much more experienced and am confident enough to feed in public. It's quite funny though how some people react. Because it looks like I am just cradling the baby in my arms, some friends, especially the males, will come right up to my side to talk to me, the back away in shock when they realise what's happening there! Hahah. All the while still trying to conceal their shock as they don't want to seem like they disapprove.

I'm just someone who enjoys reading your blog. Can't agree with you more about your post. I used to wear t-shirt bras so you can imagine how was it like when I had to wear all those ugly nursing bras when I was breastfeeding my girls. The Piegeon brand breast pads are not that bad but I still hate putting them on. I could never wear dresses and nothing too tight if not the outline of the bra and the nipples would show. After relocating to UK, there were better choices. Nursing bras that look as pretty as normal ones. Perhaps you can try Mothercare and Marks and Spencer?

I bought mine from Mothercare in UK. They had pretty floral prints in all sorts of colours and lace ones too. At least they didn't make me feel so dowdy. Perhaps the branches in Singapore don't carry this range. Yes, moms-in-mind carry quite a good range of nursing bras. I was delighted when I saw their padded bras but unfortunately they didn't fit me well. Underwired ones gave me blocked ducts and engorgements so I shunned them. My older daughter will be 4 end of the month and the little one is 22 mth old.
