So, I'm now well on my way in preparation for a smooth VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean).
I've switched doctors to the very famous, pro natural Paul Tseng from TMC. He is really calming and his caring knowledgeable manner reminds me of Goh Chok Tong! Ha. I met him last week and he has given the go ahead for a VBAC, stating that my chances for success are very high:
* My baby is a good smallish size
* There is a more than 18 month gap between my first delivery and this one
* The reason for the previous Csection is a non issue: no one can say the pelvic cavity of a normal healthy woman is too small for the baby. Only going through a trial of labour itself will determine if the cervix can dilate enough.
So, that’s one hurdle out of the way. My current doctor was totally comfortable with my switch and wished me well. She agreed that it was better if I went with Paul, as she would not have been comfortable with a doula and agreed that her style of managing labour is very different from Dr Tseng
I’ve also had my first hypnobirthing lesson with my doula Ginny Phang. She taught Mark and I how to turn all our negative thoughts into positive ones and how it is important to start “flowering” the positive thoughts and “ weeding” out the negative ones from now. Success of our VBAC is very much determined by our mindset! We were also taught a series of relaxation exercises and as homework, I have to listen to a CD which recites the positive affirmations and also lulls me into a 20 minute relaxation exercise.
Ha! Quite Hippie. I know some people will probably roll their eyes upwards at all this. Mark for one, can’t stop giggling whenever I am listening to my affirmations. I don’t blame him lah. I mean, you can’t expect him to relate to affirmations like:
"My cervix opens outward and allows my baby to ease down"
"My pelvis releases and opens as have those of countless women before during labour and birth."
He loves the 20 min relaxation exercise though, which fills you with all these positive energies. Barely a minute into the exercise, he will already have fallen asleep… snoring some more. Quite irritating as I will get distracted by his snoring as I try to relax. Men ah…
I can just imagine him sleeping as I “labour” to the CD in the delivery room, and having to wake him up when it’s time for the baby to be born.
So, anyway, 4 more weeks, maybe 5. I can’t wait. All this positive thinking is doing me good.
